On the subject of the recent death of the Renamo leader, former Renamo Number Two Raúl Domingos supports the indication of a military figure as his successor.
Domingos believes the party will remain strong even after the death of its leader and, without advancing any particular name, says that someone connected to the military wing would be most appropriate as a replacement.
Domingos was expelled from Renamo in 2000 and created the Party of Democracy and Development (PDD). Although when he left he was seen in some sectors as a potential Dhlakama successor, he says that his relationship with the president of Renamo has always been good.
The PDD president says that Dhlakama, who died on the 3rd of this month, must be considered a national hero.
“When he said, “We are going to attack”, attacks would take place. “We stop”, and immediately afterwards it would stop. Just as he declared the truce. As long as he didn’t suspend, nothing happened. So there was an obedience, rigorous obedience, of his commands. So he had this ability to command and control the forces. Now, let us wait and see who his successor is, this person who will be in charge of military issues. [To see] what is the ability regarding the men at arms.”
