The councillor for the area of autonomous development in the Municipal Council of Quelimane, Renato Silva, is currently being detained for alleged contempt of authorities and non-compliance with the state of emergency decree in force in the country since the beginning of April, Noticias reports. Silva denies the accusations.
Silva is accused of keeping his bar open late into the night for several days, even after warnings from police authorities. Nine further people are being held for the same offence.
Spokesman for the police in Zambézia, Sídner Lonzo, said that the councillor was warned to close his establishment several times.
“The police did their job, but the bar stayed open, customers were at the establishment. We picked up the individuals and took them into custody. A case was drawn up of criminal liability for disobeying the mandatory closure of entertainment establishments,” Lonzo explained.
Renato Silva however denies the charge, explaining that the entrance door was open, but all the windows of the establishment were closed and the chairs were piled up in one corner.
“Suddenly, two police officers arrived and ordered me to accompany them to the 2nd Police Station, and today, Monday, we are still here. They claim disobedience, but I neither disobeyed the decree nor the police order,” Silva claimed.
TV Miramar reports below that Renato Siva also said that, on that day, the bar was undergoing a clean up.
