The population of Zongoene, southern Mozambique, have lynched two people suspected of homicide and caused riots, police spokesman for the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) said on Monday.
“The victims are individuals suspected of committing crimes, such as homicides and robberies, and we found out, from the speedy verification conducted, that the population was looking for 12 alleged criminals,” said Inacio Dina.
The police spokesman was speaking in Maputo today during a press conference called to clarify the riots in Zongoene, Gaza province.
According to Inacio Dina, the population vandalised the Administrative Post and the police station, burned two vehicles and also ransacked residences of members of the alleged criminal group.
The riots, which began on Friday and lasted until Sunday, forced the police to mobilise the Rapid Intervention Force [Riot Police] to control the population.
“If a group of individuals who are committing crimes has in fact been identified, what is lawful is to report them to the police authorities,” said the official.
Inacio Dina further said that the police suspect that the population is keeping two other people under arrest, also suspected of organising crimes in that region.
The population is “committing crimes rather than seeking justice,” the spokesman said, adding that police will not tolerate any more riots in that region.
