Mozambique: Government promises more business-friendly legislation
Noticias / Miguel Matabel (L) talks to Prime Minister Agostinho do Rosario after being sowrn in as CFM's new chairman.
Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario on Wednesday urged the new chairperson of the national port and rail company (CFM), Miguel Matabel, to rationalize expenditure and to ensure transparent management.
Speaking at the ceremony at which Matabel was sworn in, Rosario said he must embark upon “careful and transparent management of human and material resources. He must also guarantee transparency in the procurement of goods and services, and must ensure austerity. There must be no excessive expenditure”.
The new CFM chairperson, the Prime Minister added, must work for CFM to become a regional and international reference point. The company “should continue to play its traditional strategic role in transporting passengers and goods at national and regional level, especially for landlocked countries”.
Rosario challenged Matabel to direct his activities towards the construction of new port facilities, necessary for marketing the natural gas that will be extracted from the Rovuma Basin in the far north of the country, and also for the revival of coastal shipping planned by the government.
Matabel told reporters that he would first “familiarize myself with the CFM Strategic Plan, looking at the resources of the company, and attempting to make it a profitable concern. We all know that the watchword is to increase production and productivity. But we also want to transport people and goods in safety”.
Matabel takes over from Victor Gomes who last month was appointed deputy chairperson of the Bank of Mozambique. Matebel’s last position was chairperson of the Executive Commission of the state owned insurance company, EMOSE. But prior to that he had worked at CFM as General Inspector of Ports and Railways.
