Filipe Nyusi said on Saturday that armed groups operating in the north of the country killed five of their own members during a failed attack on the village of Olumbe, Palma district, on Friday night.
Filipe Nyusi was delivering his opening speech at the IV session of the Central Committee of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), the country’s ruling party, of which the head of state is also president.
“Still [today], when [the Central Committee session] entered, the [military] officers informed me that last night, at the end of the day, they [insurgents] tried to enter Olumbe,” the Mozambican head of state reported.
Nyusi said that the alleged execution of their own members showed the true level of impiety of the terrorists operating in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.
Filipe Nyusi did not provide any further details about the circumstances in which the deaths occurred.
