Mozambique today took over the chairmanship of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at the organisation’s annual summit, which this year is taking place in virtual format because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“This summit coincides with the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the founding of our regional organization, and takes place in a context and circumstances in which our countries need to redouble their efforts to implement the Industrialization Strategy and Roadmap, the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and the goals defined in the African Union Agenda 2063,” Mozambican head of state Filipe Nyusi said in a message about the summit last week.
Technical meetings started last Monday with the SADC Standing Committee of Senior Officials, and ended on Friday with the summit of the Troika that manages the organisation.
The current SADC troika comprises of SADC Chairperson John Pombe Joseph Magufuli, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania; his predecessor and President of the Republic of Namibia, Hage G. Geingob, as the Outgoing Chairperson, and Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, the President of the Republic of Mozambique as the Incoming Chairperson.
Mozambique last hosted an SADC summit in 2012, when it was chaired by former head of state, Armando Guebuza.
The opening and closing ceremonies of the summit will be broadcast live on Mozambique Television (TVM).
The SADC has 16 member states and was established in 1980 as the Southern African Development Coordination Conference (SADCC). It assumed its current form in August, 1992.
The organisation aims to promote the region’s socio-economic growth and development with the aim of assuming “a more competitive and effective role in international relations and the world economy”.
The SADC member states are: South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
