A memorandum of understanding signed on Monday, May 11, between the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Ministry of State Administration and Civil Service and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has guaranteed US$58 million to promote decentralised governance.
The Decentralised Governance Promotion Program aims to empower and encourage a more capable local government system, and will run for five years.
Within the scope of the same partnership, the government will receive a further US$1.4 million to finance its fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking just minutes after the signing of the agreement, Adriano Maleiane, Minister of Economy and Finance, explained that a partnership would be established with different development stakeholders, namely the National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique (ANAM) and the private sector, within the scope of the ‘Business against Covid-19’ initiative, and with the Youth Volunteer Corps [Corpo de Voluntários Jovens], in order to promote youth engagement across the country, ” because we are all called upon to get involved in fighting Covid-19″.
