The Mozambican Defence and Security Forces has announced the deaths of more than 100 terrorists in Cabo Delgado during operations against the insurgents’ ‘Syria’ base, which also resulted in the destruction of dozens of vehicles.
There has been intense fighting between the Defence and Security Forces and terrorists in the northern operational theatre over the past few days.
The announcement was made by the commander-general of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Bernardino Rafael, during the opening of the XX Police Coordinating Council, which has been taking place in Pemba since Thursday (29-10).
According to Rafael, recent attacks by government forces targeted the insurgents’ ‘Syria’ base, where more than 89 terrorists were killed. “In the past 72 hours, the Defence and Security Forces stationed in the northern operational theatre carried out operations specifically aimed at the ‘Syria’ base, where they destroyed six terrorist camps,” he announced.
Fifteen vehicles used by the terrorists in raids on communities were also destroyed, in addition to 20 motorcycles and three tons of various food products that had been looted.
This Thursday, further operations took place against the same base.
“This morning, we mounted a surprise attack against ‘Syria’, where we surprised them while cooking. We destroyed 16 50-litre pots with their contents, and 19 terrorists met immediate death when they tried to open fire on the FDS. Several products were destroyed, and we are on the ground up until now,” Rafael said.
Citizens call for police reinforcement
The XX Police Coordinating Council is discussing, among other matters, the public order and security situation, the health of police agents with regards to Covid-19, the public safety plan for the 2020-2021 festive season and the conduct of the corporation.
Citizens who spoke to DW Africa in Pemba hope that the high-level PRM meeting will result in the strengthening of the police force and intensifying of patrols in the municipality.
According to Jussuino, there have been robberies at night. “Patrolling should be increased, as it currently only happens in urban centres, mainly on the road. On the outskirts, in Natite and Cariacó, it doesn’t happen. There isn’t [patrolling there],” he complains.
Baisse, a mototaxi driver from Pemba, calls for stronger measures against alleged corruption among traffic police. “On a daily basis, when they [traffic police officers] stop you and you show all your full documents, they still take your motorcycle keys. They may ask you for 50 or 100 meticais [between €0.60 and €1.20]. If you don’t have it, they tow the motorcycle to the police station,” he says.
Commander-General Rafael decreed zero tolerance for police corruption several years ago. The XX Coordinating Council of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique ends this Friday (30-10).
