Two people were killed and 10 injured as a result of the collision of two service trains on the Cuamba-Lichinga line at the Mitande administrative post in Niassa province late on Friday (November 25).
The Mota-Engil locomotives were involved in rehabilitation work on the recently reopened line. The two casualties – one Mozambican and the other Portuguese – both worked for Mota-Engil.
A Verdade reports indicate that the accident resulted from a failure of communication between the two train crews. As a result, the Saturday passenger train service from Cuamba to Lichinga was cancelled, inconveniencing people who depend on trains for transport.
António Mateus, Director of Transport and Communications in Niassa, told Mozambican public television that he was waiting for a crane to remove the locomotives.
