Residents of the of Macaúle and Muntanhane neighbourhoods in Marracuene blocked the Maputo Ring Road in the early hours of Monday morning in support of their demand for electrification.
About three dozen residents joined the protest, placing barricades to prevent vehicles using the Maputo Ring Road before a police contingent was deployed to restore circulation.
The woman cited in the report below says the situation is serious, and that people there are living as if they were in the middle of the countryside.
The protest may have been triggered by the removal of posts and cables that had brought hope to residents.
EDM representative for Marracuene District, Fernando Santos, acknowledges the problem and sympathises, but says there is light at the end of the tunnel – all of Marracuene District’s 39 neighbourhoods are scheduled to be fully electrified by the end of next year.
