Maputo municipal police immobilised several school transport vehicles on Friday for various irregularities, including the number of passengers they were carrying. The result is that pupils of various schools in the capital missed classes without their schools directors or parents knowing why.
Following on from Friday’s blitz, which resulted in the seizure of 13 vehicles with excess passenger capacity and other irregularities including lack of licenses, the authorities have promised to intensify enforcement of school transport regulations and extend the radius to the entire metropolis, reports Noticias today.
The inspection aims to put an end the fashion for tinted windows and loud music which, the PRM say, endangers the physical safety of children transported in some of the minibuses.
Police spokesman Lazaro Valoi said that the intention was not to damage the service, which was useful and necessary, but to address deficiencies that could result in tragedies.
