Mozambique: Rural area tractor, trailer public transport an outrage - Renamo
Voa Portugues
Interviewed by VOA on Wednesday, September 15, in Washington, before his meeting with the director general of the IMF, Christine Lagarde, President Fiipe Nyusi said that “the most interested in clarifying the debt situation in Mozambique is the the Mozambican people”.
The president said it was in the interest of the people for such an audit to be carried out, and that it had been agreed that an IMF team would come to Mozambique to support the authorities in conducting it.
In his interview, Nyusi recognized that transparency was crucial to Mozambique continuing to receive international support. The debts came to light in April last year during meetings of the IMF and World Bank, and exceed one billion dollars.
President Nyusi is visiting Washington as peace negotiations between Renamo and the government resume in Mozambique, albeit without consensus. Regarding the talks, Nyusi said that “a solution that does not violate the law and is enduring” was needed.
One of the points demanded by Renamo is the withdrawal of government troops from Serra da Gorongosa, where their leader, Afonso Dhlakama, is reportedly in hiding. The government has turned the suggestion down.
“I have hope that some solution will emerge soon (…) but a solution that does not violate the law and is enduring,” Nyusi said.
Another Renamo demand is the governance of the six provinces where it claims to have won the 2014 elections. Nyusi said: “Tearing up the Constitution is the worst thing we can do.”
