INAM, Mozambique’s weather bureau, predicted Monday night’s storm but its equipment did not allow it to foresee its magnitude
The National Institute of Meteorology says the bad weather that hit Maputo and Gaza provinces this Monday was known to them, but that they had no more detail than that which the institute’s weather modelling provides.
The Council of Ministers has already announced preliminary data on damages incurred as a result of the storm, with 12 dead and 30 injured, and 22 classrooms and 12 health centers damaged or destroyed. The government added that there are still teams on the ground determining losses.
No parking under trees
Following the gale in Maputo province, Mozambique’s National Fire Brigade (SENSAP) said that people should avoid parking their vehicles under roadside trees in such situations.
SENSAP spokesman Leonildo Pelembe said people should not shelter under the trees as they can attract lightning. Pelembe said one of the main causes of death was people being in inappropriate places as a result of not having safer alternatives.
