Mozambique: 'Alarming proportion' of femicide cases in centre region - Watch
TVM / Newly sworn in National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) director Ilídio Miguel.
Ilídio Miguel was sworn in today by Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, who oversees the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC).
Although his last public post was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture, Ilídio Miguel is not new to the crime-fighting sector. He served as chief of staff of the Interior Ministry, in addition to having previously held some positions in the now defunct Criminal Investigation Police (PIC).
In his new duties, Miguel will be assisted by Vicente Chicote, also sworn in today.
Amid the lack of clarification of several criminal cases in the country, the Prime Minister asked that investigators be swiftly sworn in and said that the perpetrators of kidnappings and murders should not go unpunished.
Prime Minister Agostinho do Rosário also inaugurated the Secretary-Permanent of the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs.
SERNIC is an institution which replaces the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC) and aims to develop criminal investigation without interference from, organic dependency or hierarchical subordination to the General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM). To this end, in light of the legal instrument approved in July 2016, SERNIC will be subordinate to the Ministry of Interior and supervised by the Prime Minister.
With its administrative autonomy, SERNIC also aims to monitor the evolution of criminal phenomena, permanently adjusting its organization and functioning to the dynamics and demands of the development of society, specializing increasingly in the investigation of more serious and complex criminality.
Ilídio José Miguel replaces Paulo Chachine , former PIC Director.
