A new paediatric block, built and equipped with Chinese support, entered service in Beira Central Hospital, Mozambique, this week, it was reported yesterday.
The block occupies four floors, and comprises paediatric emergency services, a clinical analysis laboratory, digital radiography, intensive care and malnutrition units and in-patient beds, newspaper Diário de Moçambique in Beira reports.
Work on the block, budgeted at around US$7 million (EUR 5.9 million), started in July. The unit will have a reinforced complement of nurses and doctors.
The city of Beira is located on the Indian Ocean coast and is the capital of Sofala province, but the hospital will accepted referrals from Manica, Tete and part of Zambezia provinces in the centre of the country.
Children make up more than half of Mozambique’s approximately 29 million population, according to official figures. A total of 79 in every 1,000 children die under the age of five, according to data on infant mortality in Mozambique from the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) for 2015.
Data from several institutions also indicated that 43 per cent of Mozambican children suffer from chronic malnutrition, a problem that is getting worse in rural areas.
