Mozambique’s Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle (ACLLN) on Saturday re-elected Fernando Faustino as its general secretary for a further five year term of office.
The fifth national conference of the ACLLN, held in Maputo, also elected a new National Committee and Secretariat. The ACLLN is one of the organisations affiliated to the ruling Frelimo Party, and its general secretary sits ex oficio on the Frelimo Central Committee.
At the closing session of the conference, President Filipe Nyusi, in his capacity as President of Frelimo and of the ACLLN, challenged the new leadership to “a paradigm shift” to involve veterans massively in the country’s economic agenda.
“I want to encourage you to uplift Mozambique through a notable and visible movement of mobilization for economic activities which contribute to expanding the tax base”, he said.
He urged the ACLLN leaders to display “a pragmatic vision” in this new term of office. “Justify the vote of confidence that you have received, by giving the ACLLN the capacity to reinvent itself in each cycle of its life. Continue to raise high the dream of the founders of our Frelimo”.
Nyusi insisted that the ACLLN leaders must respect the principles of Frelimo, in order to pursue successfully the goals for which they were elected. He also hoped to see an active contribution from the veterans in efforts to achieve and consolidate effective peace in Mozambique.
The ACLLN conference, Nyusi added, was a further step in preparing the 11th Congress of Frelimo, scheduled for September. He hope that each veteran would play a role in strengthening the Party, seeking to make it the true mirror of a society where the people are the beginning and end of government action.
On Friday, at the end of a session of the outgoing ACLLN National Committee, Nyusi stressed that Mozambicans are placing their trust in the wisdom of the veterans. This trust, he said, was linked to “the implacable defence of sovereignty and of national unity”.
“In the veterans the Mozambican people have the repository of their knowledge and their ceaseless will for a better Mozambique”, he declared.
