Garbage collectors closed National Road Number 4, the main road between Mozambique and South Africa, for about half an hour on Wednesday in protest at attacks on foreigners in the neighbouring country.
Mozambican Police Command spokesman Fernando Manhiça told Lusa that garbage collectors from the Malhampsene depot in Matola, Maputo province, erected barricades around 9:30 a.m., blocking traffic for around 30 minutes.
Circulation was only resumed after barricades were removed by police officers.
“The police have the situation under control and traffic is flowing normally,” he said.
A new wave of violence against foreigners and looting began in South Africa this weekend, mainly in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The unrest has already killed five people, South African police said.
