France and German have guaranteed support for Mozambique in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, through making vaccines available through the COVAX facility, for which they are the main funding agencies.
Diplomats from the two European countries spoke to reporters in Maputo on Wednesday, after a courtesy meeting with Esperanca Bias, the chairperson of the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic.
“In the European Union, France and Germany are the main financial backers of the COVAX facility, which has already announced the delivery of vaccines for Mozambique in the coming weeks”, said French ambassador David Izzo. He pointed out it would be useless only to vaccinate the populations of France and Germany, since the pandemic is a matter for the entire world.
In that context, “Germany, France, Mozambique and the European Union are committed to ensuring that vaccination reaches the weakest people in the world”, said Izzo.
Containing the spread of Covid-19 was a global battle, he said, which could only be won by vaccinating people of all continents – although that would sometimes require patience.
“It’s a commitment by the German chancellor, the French president and the European Union which we intend to carry out in the coming months”, Izzo added. “Unfortunately we need patience, because all countries want the same vaccine to fight against the same pandemic. But we are all together in the same boat”.
