A major fire broke out yesterday at a cell phone accessory store room in the old Laurentina brewery premises in downtown Maputo. The store room is owned by Casa Jatan, a store that sells these goods.
According to witnesses, the fire was caused by a short circuit inside the store room at around 4:00 pm. There were no casualties, but the material damage was extensive.
The National Public Rescue Service (SENSAP) got to the site about an hour later and had difficulty coping with the fire, which quickly spread to a second store room. Several shops in the area closed their doors for fear the fire would spread.
The store room owner herself complained of the firefighters’ poor performance, calling them incompetent. Folha de Maputo reports that the fire brigade deployed three vehicles and one tanker truck.
Fighting the fire took several hours because of the third-floor location of the blaze and weak water pressure (in the hoses).
Bystanders volunteered to assist by helping the fire department to position the stairs and hoses inside the burning warehouse.
The traffic at the intersection of Guerra Popular and 25 de Septembro avenues was restricted for several hours because the roads were full of bystanders, firemen and police.
