Macaneta was one of the favourite places for Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties, days out or even holidays in Mozambique, but the outcome has been a beach left filthy due to the influx of tourists who have spent the holidays there.
In response, Macaneta residents of have been involved since Wednesday in a voluntary campaign to clean their beach, in the Marracuene district in Maputo.
The recent opening of the bridge giving access to the Macaneta area in Marracuene, Maputo, carried hundreds of people to the beach during the festive season. Even after the Christmas and New Year celebrations, there are still many people there.
Local tour operators say the influx of visitors during the festive season exceeded expectations. However, the scenario took with it environmental pollution. According to tour operators, bathers leave rubbish such as bottles, plastic bags and soft drinks cans on the beach.
In order to remedy the situation, young volunteers have been cleaning the beach, sometimes in return for money from tour operators or bathers. But this doesn’t seems to be enough, so a multi-sectoral task team from the tourism and environmental protection sector is expected to run a campaign called “Operation Caco” on Macaneta beach tomorrow, Saturday.
