The Mozambican Confederation of Business Associations (CTA) has called on the institutions of justice to make every effort to detain those who attempted to assassinate CTA chairperson Agostinho Vuma on Sunday.
Two assailants shot and seriously injured Vuma as he was leaving his office in central Maputo on Sunday afternoon.
At a Tuesday press conference, the chairperson of the CTA general assembly, Rui Monteiro, demanded action against the criminals. “I am appealing strongly to the bodies of the administration of justice, particularly the Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, to use all their resources to clear up this case rapidly”, he said.
“As the CTA, we condemn any and every type of violence against citizens”, said Ribeiro. “We consider this attempt against the life of our chairperson an inhuman and repugnant act, contrary to the principles of peaceful coexistence that characterise our society”. He added that attacks on business people have a negative impact on the business environment.
He said the CTA, to avoid any leadership vacuum, has appointed Alvaro Massinga, previously the deputy chair, as interim chairperson while Vuma is recovering from his injuries.
Massinga will thus be in charge of carrying out the activities envisaged in the CTA’s Strategic Plan, as well as the emergency measures required in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Vuma underwent surgery to remove the two bullets that struck him, and his condition is said to be stable. He is recovering in the Heart Institute (ICOR) in central Maputo.
