A morgue designated solely for Covid-19 victims will be erected by the Municipal Council of Chimoio, Manica province, soon.
The expansion of the existing mortuary building, as well as the acquisition of a cooling system, will cost the municipality about four million meticais, Mayor João Ferreira announced at a press conference celebrating two years in office at the head of the Municipal Council of Chimoio.
The municipality believes that the remains of Covid-19 victims should be stored in morgues reserved exclusively for that purpose, to reduce the risk of spreading the disease.
“We want to arrange a space where the remains of residents who die from coronavirus are deposited separately. All the bodies are currently being kept in the same place,” the mayor said.
The cold storage capacity in Provincial Hospital of Chimoio morgue, which is managed by the municipality, was recently increased from five to 60 chambers.
Joao Ferreira said that the project would soon materialise, and that a survey to determine the number of cold storage chambers needed and decide on the location of the new morgue was underway.
