Mozambique: Maputo solid waste collection needs two weeks to stabilise - City Council
Children fishing in Nhamatanda, Sofala, Mozambique
Agricultural fields and entire village streets have been transformed into fishing grounds in the south-eastern interior of Nhamatanda, in the Mozambican province of Sofala. Children are now fishing there, in an attempt to feed the numerous families displaced by recent floods.
District authorities in Nhamatanda report having 725 families in three shelter centres they have opened. Most of these people were rescued last Wednesday, when a torrent of water resulting from heavy rains flooded villages in the lower part of Nhamatanda, itself already severely hit by Cyclone Idai almost a year ago.
The floods wiped out what would be the first post-cyclone harvest, worsening the already weak food security in the region, and making survival even more difficult.
