Traffic on the Maputo Ring Road was brought to a standstill for six hours when residents of Chiango erected barricades in the early hours of this morning, demanding the authorities respond to the spate of traffic accidents in the area.
The interruption of traffic created chaos on connecting roads in the KaMavota municipal district, affecting drivers from Matola and Marracuene as well. Passenger minibuses on their way to the city centre from the provinces were caught in the prolonged traffic jam, too.
Residents said their action was to highlight the high number of fatal road accidents, especially those involving children. This year alone, 10 people have been killed, they say, most recently a six-year-old girl who was hit by a car on Thursday.
The Rapid Intervention Unit, Police and Transit Police were mobilised to control the situation and restore normal traffic circulation, while firefighters had to intervene to extinguish a blaze in the bush near the road caused by rubber bullets and tear gas rounds.
Maputo City Council Transport Councillor João Mathlombe visited the site and promised that the municipality would install traffic lights there urgently to address the situation.
Residents however are demanding speed bumps and a pedestrian bridge so that their children can cross the road in complete safety.
