In view of the government’s concern to expand Covid 19 testing to some provincial capitals, Beira Hospital Central (HCB) has requested support from the SOS Corona group to develop and deliver a testing kiosk to collect samples for testing cheaply, fast and safely.
One of HCB’s concerns was the high cost of personal protective equipment (PPE) used by laboratory technicians collect samples for Covid 19 testing. World Health Organisation (WHO) protocols determine that personal protective equipment (PPE), comprising shoes, suit, goggles, mask and cap be used once only and immediately discarded. Depending on the number of tests intended, this would be very costly and beyond the HCB’s budget.
Based on a photo of a kiosk being used in India, the SOS Corona designed, financed and manufactured a test kiosk that allows technicians to collect Covid 19 samples cheaply, quickly and safely, dispensing almost entirely with the need for PPE.
Fully approved by the HCB scientific committee with regard to safety, the kiosk, the first of its kind in Mozambique, was yesterday handed over to the health authorities in Beira in a ceremony led by Provincial Governor Lourenço Bulha and attended by other members of the government, the press and local civil society.
