SACBC: Reiterate call for authorities to address election “disgruntlement” in Mozambique - ...
The Mozambican Prime Minister, Carlos Agostinho do Rosário, said on Wednesday that the Chinese offer of the first batch of Covid-19 vaccines that arrived in Mozambique expresses “brotherhood” between the two countries.
“This gesture expresses the brotherhood and solidarity with the Mozambican people in the fight against Covid-19,” he said, speaking moments after the arrival of the first batch of vaccines to Mozambique from China.
In total, there are 200,000 doses of Verocell vaccine, including syringes, manufactured by Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm.
The doses arrived at the Armed Forces air base in Maputo in a symbolic event attended by members of the Mozambican government and Chinese diplomats.
According to the Mozambican Prime Minister, the vaccination strategy in Mozambique will give priority to “high risk” groups, with emphasis on health professionals who are on the front line of the fight against Covid-19.
“The rapid availability of vaccines reflects the determination and commitment of the two highest leaders of Mozambique and China to ensure the well-being of the Mozambican population,” he said, adding that the Mozambican government will continue to make efforts for the country to have more batches of vaccines
“The vaccine should be seen as a complementary measure in the prevention and fight against Covid-19 and, therefore, we must continue to prioritise the basic preventive measures,” he added.
Mozambique is also waiting for its share of the Covax international mechanism.
The country had, by Wednesday, reported 608 Covid-19 deaths , 56.920 cases , 37.870 recoveries and 228 hospitalised patients. Active coronavirus cases across Mozambique stood at 18.438.
In January alone Mozambique recorded more cases and deaths than in all of 2020.
