This Friday, 54 families relocated from the heavy sands exploration zone in Zambézia’s Inhassunge district took possession of their new homes – Type 3 masonry houses built on Olinda Island at a cost of over 90 million meticais to the Africa Great Wall Mining company.
The homes, which have three bedrooms, a living room, bathroom and cistern, are valued at more than one and a half million meticais each.
The beneficiary families say that the company was honouring its commitments, despite the new location being different from their places of origin, where they had lived according to their habits and customs. Resettled resident José Luís says that he would nevertheless try to adapt to his new circumstances.
Governor of Zambézia Pio Matos, who witnessed the handover, asked communities to look after their new houses and use them in a responsible manner.
Following the provision of homes for the community, it is expected that construction of a health centre and church and the installation of electricity supply infrastructure will commence shortly.
