Several families living in the village of Manilha, in Mocímboa da Praia district, temporarily abandoned their homes and took refuge in the woods on Wednesday after allegedly spotting, on the banks of the river Quinhevo, the armed men who have been carrying out attacks in Cabo Delgado.
District Administrator Rodrigo Parruque declined to be formally interviewed, but did confirm that he had received news of the panic among Manilha residents.
The situation created an atmosphere of fear within the population, and the climate of insecurity forced the provincial governor, Julio Parruque, and his entourage to travel from Pemba to Mocímboa da Praia for International Forestry Day celebrations in military armoured cars.
