The number of girls trafficked for sexual exploitation to neighbouring South Africa arriving at the Moamba transit centre in Maputo province, southern Mozambique, has been increasing because of a recent repatriation drive by the South African authorities.
At the moment, the centre hosts 20 girls, most of whom have arrived from transit centres in neighbouring South Africa.
According to the provincial director of Gender, Children and Social Action, Ana Mariza Tamane Sitoe, quoted by Noticias on Saturday, the directorate supported 16 girls in the first quarter of the year, but numbers have suddenly increased.
The repatriation is the result of the withdrawal of local authority subsidies for reception centres in South Africa. The many South African girls in the local centres are also victims of the cutbacks.
The figures were presented at the second session of the Provincial Coordinating Council for Gender, Children and Social Action, which ended on Friday in Boane, Maputo province. The two-day meeting took place under the motto:
“Ensuring the right to protection of disadvantaged target groups is to ensure social welfare.”
