The Judicial Court of the Province of Maputo is to pass sentence regarding the murder of attorney Marcelino Vilanculo, who died in April 2016, on January 12, official sources quoted by “Notícias” report.
The trial concerning the murder of attorney Marcelino Vilanculo began on October 10, 2017, and accuses Edith of being one of the perpetrators of the crime. Three other defendants are under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court, on the basis of an appeal lodged against the order to pronounce one of them.
Marcelino Vilanculo, an attorney with great affection for Maputo, who was in charge of the investigation into cases of abduction, was shot dead outside his home on the night of April 11, 2016.
The prosecution indicated that Cylindo followed the magistrate from his workplace and gave orders for him to be shot. In March last year, the Supreme Court denied a petition for habeas corpus in Edith Cylindo’s favor.
Threats and intimidation
On the anniversary of Marcelino Vilanculo’s death, the Mozambican Association of Public Prosecutors denounced ongoing threats and intimidation of justice system personnel.
“We have expressed our disgust at this ongoing intimidation of magistrates. We know the risks we face, but we are firm and determined [in our fight against crime],” AMMMP President Eduardo Sumana said at a press conference at the time.
In another case, Judge Dinis Silica, who had cases in connection with a wave of abductions in Maputo, was shot dead in the Mozambican capital by persons unknown in broad daylight in 2014.
