Vendors at the Zimpeto Wholesale Market are ignoring the dictates of Maputo City Council and have taken over the space from where the stalls were removed a week ago.
Retailers are putting their products on sale from improvised stalls, but without observing hygiene measures, a real threat to public health in these Covid-19 times.
When the inspectors arrive, there is confusion.
In fact, this has been a daily struggle for Zimpeto Wholesale Market vendors in Maputo, and there is no shortage of justifications.
“We know it is prohibited, but we have no alternative. We are not going to die of Covid-19, but of hunger,” Matilde Mbalate says.
With no outcome in sight, Maputo City Council is not backing down, but continues to seize products sold in defiance of regulations.
