Politician Venâncio Mondlane is being heard today at the Attorney General’s Office in Maputo about one of the eight cases in which he is a target in the context of the protests and post-election social unrest in Mozambique.
“My expectations are not that great”, said the former presidential candidate, speaking to journalists at Maputo airport on Monday, after a few days away from the country, in Botswana, when asked about the summons to give statements at the Attorney General’s Office, revealing then that he is aware that he is a target in eight cases.
Mondlane said he did not know which of the cases he would respond to today, declaring, however, that he was “ready” to respond and stating that the objective of these cases is to “intimidate, terrorize, instill fear”.
On the other hand, Venâncio Mondlane recalled the various processes and complaints that he submitted in recent months to the PGR, including an alleged attempt on his life during the campaign for the general elections of October 9, in which he ran for President of the Republic. He also pointed to the complaint that he filed with the PGR regarding 398 cases of “extreme violence” against members of his “political organization”, including “40 deaths”, stressing that, so far, none of the cases have had any development, for which he accused the institution of “bias”.
The hearing at the PGR was scheduled for Monday, but at the politician’s request it was postponed until today, at 9:00 am local time (two hours less in Lisbon).
The former presidential candidate had not made any public statement since last Wednesday, when the Mozambican police fired shots to disperse a crowd that was following a caravan led by the politician, which precipitated his escape from the scene.
During his absence from Mozambique, Mondlane claims to have held working meetings, particularly with the former President of Botswana Ian Khama.
