O País / The road accident has left more than 10 believers injured in Namaacha
More than 10 people were injured yesterday as a result of a road accident in the Namaacha district of Maputo province, when a mini-bus carrying believers home from celebrations at the Our Lady of Fatima shrine left the road and overturned.
The accident occurred around 12:00 noon when, according to witnesses, the driver tried to descend a steep curve at high speed, but lost control causing the vehicle to overturn.
Believers on the scene did everything they could to help the victims.
Some were evacuated to hospital in ambulances, others in the vehicles of believers who stopped to help. Witnesses say the driver has fled after the incident, a version of events confirmed by the traffic police.
Six individuals arrested
During the three days of celebration, the police in Namaacha detained six individuals for contempt and public order offences. “During this period, we had seven criminal cases that resulted in the arrest of six individuals, most of whom were indicted in contempt, with one case of assault”.
Alcoholic was a contributory factor in the latter case, Raul Júnior, police commander on the spot said. Júnior also said that more than six pilgrims were taken to hospital by the authorities after complaining of discomfort on the walk to Namaacha.
