Vale signed a memorandum of understanding with the Mozambican government in Maputo on April 17th formalising its support in the fight against the new coronavirus pandemic.
The document was signed by Márcio Godoy, Vale Country Manager in Mozambique, and Bruno Chicalia, Institutional Relations Manager at the company, and Iolanda Sofia da Silva Santos, Provincial Director of Health in Maputo.
Vale’s assistance is valued at approximately US$2,000,000.00 (two million US dollars) and includes hygiene materials, hospital equipment and individual protection items for healthcare professionals, as well as 80,000 rapid tests.
Gloves, masks, goggles, boots, overalls and aprons are also on the list of individual protection items for health personnel. The donation includes electric sprayers, disinfectant alcohol, bars of soap and bottles of ‘certeza’ water purification liquid. Hospital equipment including infusion pumps, sample collection kits, surgical aspirators, defibrillators, among others, will also be delivered.
The donation delivery started on April 18, in Tete, and over the coming days, support will reach other parts of the country such as Maputo, Nampula and Niassa. The material is expected to contribute to national health authorities’ efforts to combat the spread of the disease in the country.
“We are aware of our responsibility, at this challenging time for everyone. This intervention demonstrates our commitment to Mozambican society, because we understand that we are part of the communities in which we operate and an important agent of transformation,” Márcio Godoy, Country Manager of Vale in Mozambique, said.
Vale says it is doing everything in its power to protect the health and safety of its employees and the communities close to its operations, through the reinforcement of prevention measures widely publicized by health authorities.
