Mozambique: Syrah Resources targets Balama graphite production restart
Vale / A worker at Vale's Moatize project.
Workers at Vale’s Moatize coal mine in Mozambique have been on strike since Monday at around 8pm due to a dispute over bonus payments, reports AIM today.
Mozambican state news agency earlier reported that 1,400 workers went on strike because Vale had cut a profit-sharing bonus called “variable remuneration”, which the company says it only pays if it achieves strong results.
Vale says no employee globally was paid the bonus because the company didn’t achieve the required financial performance last year due to depressed commodity prices.
Contacted by AIM news agency, the provincial secretary of the National Union of Industry, Wood and Mines Workers in Tete province, Fernando Raice, did not hesitate declaring the strike legitimate.
According to Raice, cited by AIM, the company is making many subsidy cuts. “The workers have already lost, because the company has cut, for example, the 14th, 15th and 16th wages.
He said that the company information about the bonus cut arrived late to the workers, because 15 days of this month have already gone by, adding that this also contributed to the workers’ discontent.
The strike of around 1.400 workers affects mainly the sectors of production of processing of coal.
