The sum of US$95 million has been granted to the government’s Primary Health Care Strengthening Programme, one of its current priorities.
Of the total, US$80 million was made available by the International Development Association (IDA), which provides interest-free loans and grants to the poorest countries, and the remaining US$15 million by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD). The two financial institutions are part of the World Bank group.
To this end, the Mozambican government and the two institutions signed grant agreements which were ratified by the ninth ordinary session of the Council of Ministers, meeting in Maputo on Tuesday.
Strengthening primary health care is now one of the Ministry of Health’s main priorities. The emphasis will be on education regarding prevailing health problems and their prevention and control, the promotion of potable water supply and basic sanitation and an expanded vaccination programme.
The programme also covers mother and child health, including family planning and the diagnosis and treatment of common diseases, essential medicines and area health reconnaissance.
