Mozambique: 100-year-old ruin still serves as a rural hospital in Chibuto - report
Notícias / The new seven-floor doctors residence will open in 2016
A medical residence for Mozambican and Chinese doctors to be built on the Avenida Eduardo Mondlane opposite Maputo Central Hospital is expected to be completed within 12 months
The building will have 32 apartments on seven floors plus a service area and is the result of friendly ties between Mozambique and China, according to Notícias.
The project, launched on Monday by Health Minister Nazira Abdula and the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique, Su Jian, will be executed by China’s Nnatong Construction company.
Of the 32 apartments, 20 one-bedroom apartments will host Chinese doctors and 12 three-bedroom apartments are destined to Mozambican medical personnel, according to information advanced on the first-stone laying ceremony.
The Chinese ambassador said that the building is a gift arising within the framework of the China and Portuguese-speaking countries cooperation forum, and acknowledges the fact that doctors need to be properly housed in order to take proper care of their patients.
Su Jian noted that the building is just one of several Chinese inputs into the country’s health sector. China is also building a block at Beira Central Hospital of in Sofala to house its pediatric services, as well as providing grants for young Mozambicans medical students and other health-related training in China.
He also spoke of a planned delegation from Macao to help the country develop its traditional medicine skills, reports Notícias.
To Nazira Abdula, the construction of the building will help minimize the cost of housing doctors, adding that the selection of Mozambican beneficiaries is yet to be defined but that doctors coming to Maputo for specialized programs would probably be prioritized.
Abdula urged Mozambicans working at the site to bear in mind, in case of problems during construction, that they were raising a building for the benefit of the whole country.
