The US embassy in Maputo yesterday opened its doors to 30 young Mozambicans and 20 Angolans who will receive leadership training under the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) program, a US programme which aims to “encourage learning, transformation and leadership”.
A YALI Regional Leadership Centre Maputo Satellite Campus has been operating in Maputo since October in a collaboration between the Eduardo Mondlane University and Idealab, an entrepreneurship laboratory.
The group received yesterday is the second to attend the centre, and the program of activities, which includes “exchange of ideas with professionals and academics” lasts until May 26. Activities cover business and entrepreneurship, public management and civic leadership.
The YALI initiative includes the Mandela Washington Fellowship Exchange, which has already placed 24 Mozambicans and 31 Angolans on US programs.
The Southern Africa Centre for Regional Leadership programme, which encompasses the Maputo Centre, represents an investment of EUR 15.5 million by the US government’s International Development Agency, matched by an equal amount from the private sector.
There are four Regional Leadership Centres (RLCs) in YALI, in Ghana, Senegal, Kenya and South Africa.
