The United States ambassador says that the ongoing political and military tension in Mozambique is damaging the Mozambican people.
Speaking on Wednesday on the sidelines of the inauguration of aa agricultural inputs storage and supply facility in Manica, Dean Pittman said that the United States has cooperated with Mozambique for many years and, in this sense, peace is necessary because the growth and development of the economy depend on this essential factor, and without peace, cooperation between the two countries may be affected.
“In this conflict, it is only the people are who are suffering,” Pittman said, adding that “fortunately the two sides are talking, and dialogue is very important,” and, in his view, is cause to hope for the settling of the dispute between the government and Renamo.
This dialogue between the government and Renamo has moved forward recently, particularly with regard to Renamo’s claim to govern in the six provinces where it claims to have won the 2014 elections.
For peace in Mozambique, Pittman said, “as partners and friends of Mozambique, we (the US) will do anything”.
The project US$30 million project funded by the US government for agricultural inputs storage and supply facilities will be implemented in Manica, Nampula, Zambezia and Tete in the centre and north of the country.
