Mozambique: Authorities launch repatriation mission

The US Department of Defence has donated personal protective equipment (PPE) worth US$75,000 (€61,000) to the Centre for Investigation and Training in Health at the Polana Caniço [CISPOC], in Maputo.
” We trust that this equipment will help protect medical personnel on the front lines of the COVID-19 response, as they work hard to prevent the spread of this deadly virus,” US Department of Defence Lieutenant Colonel Fergal O ‘ Reilly says in the statement.
According to the Lieutenant Colonel, the contribution “only a small portion of over $900,000 of PPE that will be donated” to its Mozambican partners” by the United States Department of Defense”.
“Future donations will be made to military and civilian hospitals and clinics around Mozambique, to include in Nampula, Beira, Pemba,” he added.
“Through the longstanding partnership between our two countries, the United States Government has provided early and ongoing support for Mozambique’s response to COVID-19, with more than $19.7 million in funding, including contributions from the Department of Defence,” the statement adds.
“Our partnership supporting military health services has a long and successful history,” the lieutenant says, referring to the donation as “a clear example of how the [United States] Department of Defence continues to work” with its “civilian partners here in Mozambique”.
“We have a long history of supporting Mozambique’s Military Health, with a special focus on combating HIV/AIDS. As many of you may know, we work with Military Health in military clinics throughout Mozambique. As an example, in just the last two years, we worked together to open 12 new clinics that are now providing life-saving treatment to thousands of Mozambicans,” Lieutenant Colonel Fergal O’Reilly said.
” As with any military victory, we can only win the battle against COVID-19 through continued teamwork and dedication to our common goal,” he concluded.
Since the announcement of the first case, Mozambique has seen a cumulative total of 17,338 registered cases, of which 15,365 are reported to have recovered, and 146 deceased (according to the Ministry of Health’s update on Covid-19 released on Friday, December 18].
