US company assesses the feasibility of solar power plant in Nacala airport – Mozambique

US company HDR International has been selected to conduct an economic feasibility study for the construction of a solar energy project in Mozambique, the speciality press reported.
The study, commissioned by Mozambican company WHN Solar, will assess the viability of building a solar power plant with a maximum capacity of 100 megawatts, to be built in increments of 20 to 40 megawatts.
The solar power station will be located at Nacala International Airport, Nampula province, becoming the largest in Mozambique when it reaches the maximum power expected.
One of the key features of this project is an energy storage facility with a maximum capacity of 50 megawatts that will be adjacent to the solar power plant.
WHN Solar received a US$ 1.2 million grant from the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) under an agreement signed last August.
African investment bank Fieldstone will provide support to WHN Solar in relation to USTDA funding, with other US companies such as Marathon Engineering providing engineering and geotechnical drilling support as well as legal advice.
This project is part of the Mozambican government’s programme to provide universal access to electricity by 2030.
