The US ambassador in Maputo says an immediate cease-fire in Mozambique is necessary if negotiations between the government and Renamo are to succeed.
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony for Maputo-based Cape Verdean researcher Maria Andrade, recently awarded the 2016 World Food Prize, Dean Pittman said: “It is necessary that the two sides restore confidence,” and that the country “needs peace to talk”.
On Wednesday, 27, the head of the international mediators team, Mario Raffaelli, announced that in order to resolve the differing positions of Renamo and the government, negotiations between the two parties were being put on hold for 10 days.
Raffaelli said he hoped that the parties would come back to the negotiating table with concrete proposals.
