Urban poverty has dropped by 11 per cent over the past year under the country’s Strategic Program for Urban Poverty Reduction (PERPU).
Spokeswoman for the council of ministers Ana Comana told the press that, under PERPU, just over 84 million meticais of the 140 million planned were disbursed in 2016, financing 2,400 new projects in the commercial, industrial and livestock sectors.
“Of these projects, 50 benefited women and 1,117, or about 48 percent, benefited men. In terms of cumulative results, since 2011, total financing of 753,131,569 meticais helped implement 16,296 projects in different areas of activity and 26,631 new jobs were created,” Comana said.
The cabinet session also approved the Social Action Policy and the strategy for its implementation, as well as considering the adoption of the United Nations High-Level Policy Statement on Combating HIV/Aids, a document in which member states commit to 2020 milestones in the fight against the disease.
