Six people, including a Mozambican child, have died in a road accident in neighbouring South Africa. The identities and nationalities of the other five victims is still unknown.
Pictures circulating on social media since Monday night show the violence of the collision between the two vehicles, which occurred at around 8:00 PM Monday on National Road Number 4 (EN4), in the city of Belfast, Mpumalanga province, South Africa, not far from Mozambique’s Ressano Garcia border post.
The crash involved an Isuzu double cab with the South African license plate DX 23 JB GP, which was heading towards Johannesburg, and a Volvo bus with Mozambican registration AAA 258-MC belonging to the Luciano Luxury Coach company and on its way to Maputo.
According to a statement from the Mozambican consulate in Nelspruit, of the six dead only the body of a Mozambican child has so far been identified.
“Police have not yet been able to identify all the occupants of the bus. However, it was possible to identify the child as Joana Saugina Nhaca, a Mozambican national, passport number 13AE65571, entering South Africa via the Ressano Garcia border post and using the Lebombo border post on the same day as the accident occurred,” a statement in the possession of the newspaper O País reads.
One of the survivors told O País that the accident happened when the light vehicle cut across the bus. The victim, who only had injuries to the mouth, said that some of the victims were evacuated to local hospitals, while the less serious were treated at Maputo Central Hospital.
The bodies of the dead were taken to the morgue at the Belfast Hospital in South Africa.
Luciano Luxury Coaches, the owner of the bus, has said it will comment on the matter later this week.
