Update on thwarted kidnapping: Stray bullet kills passer-by, victim safely rescued

A member of the public whose identity has not yet been established died as he stepped out of a mini-bus and into a fire-fight in Matola’s Patrice Lumumba neighbourhood in Maputo province on Friday hit by a stray bullet from Police.

The victim was hit by a stray bullet during an exchange of shots between the police and a criminal gang involved in an attempted kidnap.

One of the gang members was also killed during the exchange of fire, and another is now recuperating in police station cells in Maputo.

According to Notícias, two other members of the public were hit by stray bullets and taken to hospital but have been discharged.

Police source say that the female victim of the kidnapping in Maputo’s Mahotas neighbourhood came through her ordeal unscathed and has returned to her family.

Police recovered two Walter pistols and 14 bullets from the kidnappers.
