At least four Frelimo supporters died and dozens were injured when an open truck with Frelimo supporters came off the road on a hill near Songo, Tete, on Sunday afternoon, 22 September.
Mozambican Liberation Front Source (Frelimo) speaks of four dead, but Songo hospital has announced five.
“Preliminary data indicate that there were four deaths, including one woman, and 56 injured, including 15 in critical condition who were transferred to Tete Provincial Hospital,” Frelimo first secretary in Tete Fernando Bemane de Sousa told a Press conference on Sunday.
Meanwhie, a source from the health unit cited by Lusa has said that two persons died at the scene of the crash and three died in hospital where 56 are still being assisted, 15 in critical condition.
The accident took place just outside Songo village, near Cahora Bassa dam, involving a truck carrying party supporters in the cargo box, returning to their places of origin.
According to CIP Eleições bulletin, “the people were packed into the back of a small lorry and were going home from a rally with President, and Frelimo presidential candidate, Filipe Nyusi in Songo. The people were returning the 150 km to Daque in Mágoe district, Tete.”
The truck crashed shortly after starting its journey, coming off the road, down a hill where it overturned, according to a statement from Frelimo Provincial Election Preparation Office in Tete province.
Mozambican police point out mechanical failures as the cause of the accident.
Lusa tried to find out from the police authorities the number of victims in the accident, but got no answers.
On September 11, following a Frelimo rally in Nampula, 10 people died when a crowd rioted out of a football stadium where the event was taking place.
