A new phenomenon is emerging in public passenger transport, before the impassive gaze of those who should be putting their hands to stopping it.
This is, charging passengers at bus terminals to guarantee a seat and travel comfortably, over and above the price of the ticket. In other words, the passenger pays twice to travel comfortably.
Seats are sold by passenger canvassers, known as “modjeiros”, at loading and disembarking points.
In these places, canvassers, in addition to competing for bus seats for later sale, take advantage of the crowds, especially during rush hours, to implement this new illicit way of making money.
From what Noticias has learned, the scheme involves canvassers using their ability to get on moving buses to occupy some seats. Then, with the bus immobilised at the stop, they look for passengers interested in purchasing those seats at prices ranging from 10.00 to 25.00 meticais, depending on the route.
