On 2nd August 2024, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), donated IT equipment (laptops) to the Attorney-General Office from Mozambique (PGR). This equipment has been acquired within the framework of the project “Project for the Enhancement of Counter-terrorism Capacity in Cabo Delgado Province”, financed by the Government of Japan and being implemented by UNODC.
The ceremony that took place at UNODC’s Office in Maputo, Mozambique, was attended by Drª. Virgínia Bila – Director of the National Administration and Finance Service at PGR, Mr. Sogo Jikuhara – first secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Mozambique, UNODC
Mozambique staff, and other guests.
UNODC believes that this donation of equipment to PGR and its Cabinet Against Transnational and Organized Crime (GCCCOT), will allow officials to respond to terrorism cases effectively, since this IT equipment will allow access to and analysis of large volumes of data, as well as complex information to be used as evidence in court.
Mr. Sogo Jikuhara, first secretary of the Embassy of Japan in Mozambique, recalled the urgent challenge on addressing security, highlighting the Japanese government commitment on improving the security system in Mozambique. “Strengthening the capacity of justice institutions is essential to improve security in Mozambique, as we believe that establishing a system that can draw on and preserve evidence and prosecute in accordance with the law, lays the foundations for maintaining security” – added Mr. Jikuhara.
In turn, Dra. Virgínia Bila, acknowledged the support from UNODC with acquisition of this IT equipment, “that will be used by the magistrates assigned to the GCCCOT at central level and the focal points at provincial level and we hope that this it will contribute to speeding up and reducing the backlog of cases, and on the other hand we believe that our action in the prevention and collection of evidence will be increasingly improved.”
This donation of IT equipment is part of the project agreed between the Government of Japan and UNODC, to provide comprehensive support to improve the capacity of the police and investigative authorities, first responders and criminal justice institutions in Mozambique to prevent, detect, investigate, prosecute and adjudicate terrorism-related offences that occur on land and at sea.
UNODC would like to thank the Government of Japan for its generosity and for sharing its vision of a safer and more stable Mozambique, and the Attorney General’s Office of Mozambique for its tireless efforts in this joint struggle against terrorism in Mozambique.
