Rector argues that 150 Mozambican students at the University of Lisbon is a “modest” figure, given the number of inhabitants Mozambique and the cultural ties shared between Portugal and the country.
University of Lisbon Rector António Serra said in Maputo on Friday that the 150 Mozambican students studying at the Portuguese institution was too low a figure and needed increasing.
“The number of Mozambican students is small. It is growing, but we are still a long way off,” Serra said during a presentation session clarifying access for international students.
One hundred and fifty was a “modest” number for a country the size of Mozambique, especially given the cultural ties between the two countries.
“There is a long way to go,” Serra said, adding that, even so, the number of Mozambican students had almost doubled in the last two years.
The University of Lisbon has 7,500 international students among the 50,000 enrolled in its various higher education programmes.
Students who do not have Portuguese nationality or are from another European Union country, and who resided in Portugal for less than two years, can access the International Student Statutes (IEE) and the vacancies it makes available.
The University of Lisbon rector had held similar presentations in South Africa before arriving in Mozambique.
