The United States Government has called for a complete review of the rules and procedures governing the tabulation of votes in Mozambican elections, with a view to increasing transparency in these processes.
“The US Embassy reiterates its call on all interested parties to apply the lessons learned, including those cited by the relevant electoral authorities, to address the problems that have been observed in several municipalities,” the US diplomatic representation in Maputo argues in a note sent to VOA on Monday.
The American authorities consider that a “full review of election rules and procedures around ballot-counting, dispute resolution, and candidate eligibility should lead to the development and implementation of reforms that increase the transparency and legitimacy of these key processes”.
“Ensuring that all participants in the democratic process in Mozambique, including voters, electoral and security officials and party representatives, have sufficient time and opportunity to understand their rights and responsibilities will be essential to ensure that the results of the October 2019 general elections reflect the will of the people and contribute to the sustainable peace that all Mozambicans want,” the note concludes.
After going to the polls in 2018 for municipal elections that have been widely criticised by opposition parties and some observers, Mozambicans in October of this year elect a new president and deputies to the Assembly of the Republic.
The election in Marromeu municipality, Nampula province, was repeated because of voting day irregularities.
